"Ugh. Humans are so whiny with all their wants and needs... Eating, drinking, sleeping... bah! So much trouble!" |
The Celestial Sword (星辰剣, Constellation Sword), previously localized as the Star Dragon Sword, is a character in the Suikoden series.
Description[]
He is an incarnation of the Night Rune. It has power over beings of the night (Such as vampires, Zombies, and other undead). It appears in the first three installments of the main Suikoden storyline and is wielded by Viktor, then Edge. Zerase is also familiar with the Night Rune.
In the original Suikoden, the Celestial Sword appears in the castle adjacent to Qlon Temple in the western Senan area of the Scarlet Moon Empire. It is located by Viktor in his attempt to destroy Neclord, who was presently terrorizing the Lorimar region, more specifically, the Warrior's Village.
In the sequel, the Celestial Sword resided in the Cave of the Wind, just south of North Window. When Neclord appeared again in an attempt to overrun the South Window area with his undead forces, Viktor confronted him in his own destroyed hometown, and resolved that he needed the Celestial Sword once again to defeat Neclord.
In the third mainstream installment of the series, the Celestial Sword is seen being wielded by a young man named Edge, who is said to have acquired it from an aging Viktor when he and his comrade Flik saved Edge's sister from a Vampire.
Story[]
Suikoden[]
The origin of the Celestial Sword remains a mystery. It claims to be the Night Rune incarnate, or the rune may be embedded within the sword. The sword is able to call upon the powers of the Night Rune, as well as speak and hover around. How the sword came to rest in the Cave of the Past is also a mystery, although Viktor could probably hazard a guess as to the why. The sword is known for its arrogant and prideful attitude.
Viktor and Tir encountered the sword in the Cave of the Past while seeking a way to defeat Neclord. The Celestial Sword threw the group 300 years into the past where they found themselves in what was revealed to be the hidden rune village where they encountered a young pre Soul-Eater bearing Ted. Windy, Yuber, and Neclord all are in the village with Windy aiming to acquire the Soul Eater. Ted is bequeathed the Soul Eater rune from his grandfather to prevent Windy from gaining it.
Before Yuber sets the village ablaze Viktor has a direct confrontation with Neclord which Neclord then recounts Viktor as seemingly familiar but not from the instance Viktor seeks revenge against him for. After the destruction of village and with Windy and her accomplices gone, Cleo asks McDohl what the group should do with young Ted, she is told "We can't take him with us" to which she agrees and tries to embolden Ted, hinting about the event with the Queen Ant on the bandit hunt, Cleo laments that can't be changed. Upon returning to the cave, the Celestial Sword agrees to be employed against Neclord. With its help, Neclord was believed to be defeated in the Lorimar region, and Viktor retained the sword through the end of the war.
With Viktor's disappearance at the fall of Gregminster, the Celestial Sword disappeared with him. When Viktor traveled north to Dunan, he eventually grew tired of the Celestial Sword's attitude and sealed the blade up in the Cave of the Wind west of South Window.
Suikoden II[]
Although he appeared to be defeated in Lorimar, Neclord reappears at North Window, and taunts Viktor to confront him with the Celestial Sword. Viktor and Riou travel to the Cave of the Winds in order to retrieve the blade, but the sword is furious over having been abandoned by Viktor and attacks the party. While being fended off, the Celestial Sword learns of the return of Neclord and once again joins Viktor.
Neclord attempts to bait Viktor into giving Neclord the sword, but Viktor sees through the ruse, and Neclord retreats. He reappears in the Tinto area, and with the help of Kahn Marley and Sierra, Viktor and the Celestial Sword finally defeat Neclord. Once again Viktor retains the sword through the end of the war.
Viktor, in possession of the Celestial Sword, comes to a village that has been attacked by vampires, and one young man's sister was kidnapped. The young man, Edge, wants to accompany Viktor and Flik to defeat the vampires, and Viktor lends him the Celestial Sword. When the vampires are defeated, Viktor returns to Dunan, leaving the sword in Edge's possession.
Suikoden III[]
Edge, in possession of the Celestial Sword, wields the sword in many duels with the sword offered as the prize. When defeated, he admits he does not own the sword and cannot forfeit it, so instead he joins the party of the person whom defeats him for the duration of the Second Fire Bringer War.
Once freed from his obligation, Edge travels south, seeking out an unnamed enemy of the Celestial Sword.
Suikoden V[]
Zerase makes reference to her need for the Night Rune when combating Sialeeds wielding the Twilight Rune. As the Celestial Sword calls himself the Night Rune incarnate, it may be that he and Zerase are acquainted. She also refers to herself as the 'daughter' of the Night Rune.

Trivia[]
- The Celestial Sword has no involvement in the main storyline of the third game, but if a completed game data is uploaded from Suikoden II, a play script appears, detailing Viktor's victory over Neclord in Tinto.
- The sword is known to be extremely vain and arrogant constantly insisting on being pampered and properly treated by its current wielder.
- In the original translations of the first three games of the series, the Celestial Sword was called Star Dragon Sword, a name that comes from reading the kanji individually, as 星 (star), 辰 (dragon, specifically referring to the Chinese zodiac sign), and 剣 (sword). However, 星辰 (seishin) would be more accurately translated as constellation. The remastered editions of Suikoden and Suikoden II more properly translate it as Celestial Sword.
