- The Japanese name for this dish is 鳥シャブサラダ. 鳥シャブ is a reference to chicken shabu-shabu. Shabu-shabu is a popular kind of food in Japan. It is made by cooking thin slices of meat and vegetables in a large pot filled with water or dashi. The meat is often cooked by holding it in the chopsticks and moving it around in the water. The meat and vegetables are often dipped in a sauce (there are several kinds) before being eaten. The name comes from the sound it makes as you cook the food in the pot.
