- The Japanese name for this dish is 闇なべ which literally translates to darkness hotpot. It is usually eaten with a group. Everyone brings their own ingredients, and then this is prepared and made in the dark. Often the ingredients are not ones that are commonly put in hotpot dishes. It has roots that may go back to the Heian Period (794-1185).
- It has the same Japanese name as the Yaminabe from Suikoden II.
