Defending the Mercenary Fortress (ビクトールの砦攻防戦; Bikutooru no Toride Koubousen), also known as Battle at the Mercenary Fortress (傭兵砦攻防戦; Youheitai no Toride Koubousen) was an army battle in Suikoden II. It is the first battle in the game.
Description[]
Defending the Mercenary Fortress was a battle that occurred in the very early stages of the Dunan Unification War. The Highland Kingdom army, led by Luca Blight, had already attacked Toto Village and Ryube Village, but the first full-scale battle against a combat force was the Battle of the Mercenary Fortress.
Although the Highland army was expected to be exhausted from forced marches, Apple, the strategist at the Mercenary Fortress, proposed a thorough defense until reinforcements could arrive from Muse City. Acting on this plan, the mercenary forces succeeded in repelling the Highland army, which was led by Solon Jhee at the vanguard. The mercenary forces initially succeeded in repelling the kingdom's army using weapons such as Viktor’s Fire Spears.
Assuming the depleted Highland army would launch a second wave two days later, the mercenaries took a brief rest and began preparing for the next battle.
However, Luca unexpectedly launched a rapid surprise assault, catching the mercenaries off guard and easily overwhelming their unsteady defenses. As a result of this defeat, Viktor’s mercenary forces were forced to retreat to Muse. This battle is known as The Second Defense of the Mercenary Fortress.
