Gau is the Tensatsu Star in Suikoden IV.

Background
Gau is a barbaric man who lives in the forest of Hermitage Island. Judging from the remnants of his tattered clothes, it's possible he may have been shipwrecked there a long time ago (possibly in his youth) and had to learn to survive on his own. As a result, he became wild and ogreish, and likely has no recollection of his past prior to his new lifestyle.

During the Island Liberation War, while Lazlo, the leader of the Island Liberation Navy was wandering around the forest of Hermitage Island, he encountered Gau, who fought him. After Gau was defeated, he respected Lazlo's strength and joined the Island Liberation Navy. While he was on board of the Dauntless, he grew friendly with Dario, who was the only person who could understand his language. After the war, he returned deep to the woods, seemingly to go on a wild rampage.
Role in the Game
After naming your army and ship, return to the Hermitage Island and wander around the forest in front of Elenor's house. Gau will eventually appear as a random encounter. Once you defeat him he will join you.
Much like Fu Su Lu and Hallec before him, Gau is an incredibly powerful combatant with high scores in HP, attack, and defense. Interestingly, unlike his precursors, Gau also has an exceptionally high speed stat, and one that increases consistently with level ups, putting him on par with the ninja characters in that regard (and eventually surpassing them). In addition, his regular attack hits three times, making either a Double Strike or Killer Rune the perfect fit for him. Gau does have lower scores in skill, magic, and magic defense, but that's to be expected. All of his positive traits make him one of the most valuable party members in Suikoden IV.
