The Hero will be the main character and Tenkai Star of Genso Suikoden Star Leap. In preview gameplay footage, his name is listed as Chao (チャオ; Chao).

The Hero will be unnamed so the player will be able to name him.
The protagonist of the story and son of the village chief, Hou. He is kind, courageous, and charming. He was trained in martial arts by Shapur, and his childhood friend is Shirin.
His weapon is a a khakkhara (a monk’s staff with metal rings). The reason for his weapon is tied to the story. His khakkhara incorporates elements of thrusting and striking attacks. It can also be used for casting magic, making it a highly versatile weapon.
Hou and Stallion are close friends. There is an episode where the protagonist is wearing the Holy Rune that Hou received long ago.

- Other fan sites state that the Hero met Stallion and received the True Holy Rune (Godspeed Rune/High-Speed Rune). This is completely incorrect based on the Japanese in the interview. The Japanese is ストーリー中ではおそらく語られませんが、ホウと天速星のスタリオンの仲がよく、ホウが昔もらった “神行法の紋章”を主人公が付けているというエピソードがあります。This translates to "It's probably not mentioned in the main story, but there's an episode where Hou and Tensoku Star (Stallion) are on good terms, and the Holy Rune (Speed Rune) (神行法の紋章) that Hou received a long time ago is the one the protagonist ends up equipping."[1]
- Other sites have also mentioned the Hero's gameplay footage name. The katakana spelling チャオ has several possible ways to be localized, including Chao, as well as Zhao. [2]
