Leknaat | |
"But no matter how harsh the journey, you must realize that there are no trials that you cannot overcome. Friends will help you along the way. Surround yourself with strength, the strength of many..." |
Known as the "Keeper of Balance," Leknaat is an enigmatic figure who is the keeper of the gates between worlds. The one who watches the great scales of Fate. She appears in every Suikoden game. Traditionally, she appears to the hero, advising him on the nature of the runes, fate, and the Stars of Destiny. Although not a Star of Destiny herself, or at least not confirmed as one, she does bear the back half of the Gate Rune. This partial True Rune has kept her alive for over 387 years as of Suikoden III.
Profile[]
Background[]
Leknaat and her sister Windy were born in the village of the Gate Rune Clan. Though the year is unknown, it is possible that this was between In Solis 30 and In Solis 60.
In the year In Solis 70, the village was burned to the ground by Harmonian Army searching for the Gate Rune; somehow, during this conflict, Leknaat lost her sight. Leknaat and Windy split the Gate Rune into two halves and fled the village to prevent Harmonia from acquiring it, going their separate ways.
Leknaat came to reside on Magician's Isle, off the northeastern coast of the Toran Republic. She secluded herself from her sister, who had slowly changed during their separation. Windy came to believe that the power was the only thing that would bring justice to the world, and seemed willing to stop at nothing to acquire True Runes.
After the formation of the Scarlet Moon Empire during In Solis 230, Leknaat offered her services to them as a seer, with monthly astrological forecasts.

Story[]
Suikoden[]
During the events of Suikoden, she appeared frequently to Tir McDohl and the Liberation Army in their times of need; depending on whether all 108 Stars of Destiny were recruited, she would also resurrect Gremio.
Suikoden II[]
She would similarly perform such a service during the events of Suikoden II, if the 108 Stars are recruited, she appears before the Battle of Rockaxe to unlock the final spell of the Bright Shield Rune. Later, she will appear after Riou and Jowy Atreides' duel to explain the power of the runes. (Leknaat does not actually save Nanami, however these scenes are necessary in order for Riou and Jowy to learn of her survival)
Suikoden III[]
Some time during In Solis 457 and In Solis 463, Leknaat and her apprentice Luc free Sarah from Circle Palace, deep within Crystal Valley, and bring the child back to Magician's Isle.
Years later, Luc leaves Leknaat, taking Sarah with him. He proceeds to instigate the Second Fire Bringer War, enlisting the help of Albert Silverberg and Yuber to destroy his own True Rune. Leknaat elects not to stop him, instead allowing him to discover for himself his fate. After his death, she welcomes Luc's and Sarah's souls back, forgiving them for their crimes in the epilogue of Suikoden III.
Suikoden IV[]
During the events of Suikoden IV, she appears to Razro in Obel when he first sleeps in his room aboard the Obel Ship. She explains to him the Rune of Punishment's parasitic nature, and informs him she will be monitoring the Rune and the way in which he uses it.
As Razro approaches Fort El-Eal, she approaches him a second time, telling him the power of the 108 Stars of Destiny – and his friends – will strengthen him through the final battle.
Suikoden V[]
Leknaat has an unknown relationship with Zerase, a black-hooded figure with ties to the Night Rune in Suikoden V. Zerase converses with Leknaat when explaining the Stars of Destiny to Freyjadour Falenas.
Trivia[]
