"My friend and I seal our thoughts here. We deeply regret that we could not make them one."
—Toto Shrine Inscription, Suikoden II

The Rune of Beginning is one of the 27 True Runes.

Description[]

The Rune of Beginning is a True Rune representing the "initial chaos of birth" inherent in times of creation.

History[]

Past bearers[]

This True Rune is usually encountered as two separate runes; the Bright Shield and Black Sword runes. The bearers of these two runes are bound by the nature of the rune to fight against each other. Scholars are uncertain whether the Black Sword and Bright Shield are the same "sword" and "shield" from the Legends of Creation, and no one knows what exact power the unified Rune of the Beginning bears. It is said that the rune grants its owner the power to "judge war."

When Han Cunningham and Genkaku are forced to battle in the years prior to the Dunan Unification War, they decided to resolve their differences by sealing the two halves of the Rune of the Beginning away in the Shrine at Toto Village.

The Shield and The Sword conflict[]

Later during the events of the Dunan Unification War, two soldiers of the Highland Army's Unicorn Youth Brigade received the runes. Riou, the adopted son of Genkaku received the Bright Shield rune while Jowy, an Atreides received the Black Sword rune. In the middle of the war, Riou started to lead a rebellion army against the Highland Army for the merciless killing of the people of the Dunan continent which was primarily done by the atrocious Luca Blight.

However, Jowy decided to be bound in the Highland Army marked by his killing of Lady Anabelle. Riou used the rune's power to gain the 108 Stars of Destiny however, the conflict between the runes started when Jowy became the leader of the Highland Army. However, in the end, the strength of their friendship defeated the will of the true rune and allowing them to be bearers without the coersion for battle.

Trivia[]

  • During the course of the game, Leknaat sometimes mistranslates both the Black Sword rune and the Bright Shield rune as both the Black Blade rune and the Shining Shield rune respectively.
