Sasarai is the Tengou Star in Suikoden III.
He also appears in Suikoden II as an enemy.
Profile
Background
Sasarai is a bishop of Harmonia and bearer of the True Earth Rune. He appears in both Suikoden II and Suikoden III leading Harmonian forces into neighboring territories. Despite his position, he is actually a fairly kind and nonchalant person. He is 17 years old in Suikoden II and 32 in Suikoden III.
In the world of Suikoden, a person cannot possess more than one True Rune at any given time. In order to bypass this limitation, High Priest Hikusaak, the spiritual leader of Harmonia, created clones of himself to use as living containers for the True Runes. Thus, Sasarai and his "brother" Luc were created to bear the True Earth Rune and the True Wind Rune, respectively, which Harmonia had acquired. Sasarai was trained from his early childhood to become a bishop of the Harmonian Church, a position of extremely high rank within the Harmonian theocratic government, yet was never told of his true nature.

- Sasarai is a powerful earth mage having a Rank S skill at using the Earth Runes.
- His skills at sensing an unsealed True Rune is impressive. In the manga, he can sense the True Rune from the Budehuc Castle up to the Ceremonial Site.
- He can also draw back/call/summon the True Earth Rune from the Ceremonial Site back to him at the Budehuc Castle.
- Using his own strength and the True Earth Rune, he minimizes the effects of the destructive combination attack of the True Fire Rune, True Water Rune and True Lightning Rune.
Story
Suikoden II
During the Dunan Unification War, he leads Harmonian reinforcements intended to support Highland's campaign over the City-States of Jowston. His involvement was short-lived however, as his forces were devastated by Luc when he used his True Wind Rune in a surprise attack, forcing him and his troops to retreat back to Harmonia.
Genso Suikogaiden Vol. 2
Shortly after, he became involved in the struggle for power within the Howling Voice Guild, where he aided Nash Latkje in his revenge against Zaj Quilous in the events of Genso Suikogaiden Vol. 2.
Suikoden III
Fifteen years later, in Suikoden III, Sasarai leads an expeditionary force into the Grasslands following the rumor of the reappearance of the Flame Champion. The expedition quickly escalates into an invasion, egged on by the recently appointed Masked Bishop's actions during that time. Harmonian forces overwhelm the Safir Clan, but they are stalled at the Chisha lands after Sasarai loses a duel with Hugo of the Karaya Clan. Later on, though, both the Chisha and Duck clans fell to the Harmonian onslaught; they are stopped only at Brass Castle, and only due to withdrawing a large number of their forces to not risk them all being destroyed by the True Fire Rune.
Luc soon reveals his betrayal of Harmonia by forcibly taking Sasarai's True Earth Rune, as well as revealing their nature as clones of Hikusaak. Sasarai then allies himself and Harmonia with the new Flame Champion's forces to defeat Luc.

Sasarai is one of the few characters that has a Pale Gate Magic Skill, and boasts an A rank in it. Therefore, the Pale Gate Rune should be put on him to give him a mix of offensive, defensive, and support magic. This especially goes for facing the True Wind Incarnation, as Sasarai cannot use the True Earth Rune to attack it.
Not a very good actor. His monotone makes the audience uneasy.
We didn't expect to join forces, but every minute counts. we should avoid useless skirmishes.
This castle could not withstand a siege. It is conveniently located on the borders of Grassland and Zexen, but it needs too much repairing.
It seems hard to understand Dios's character, but it's just his personality. He's easy to understand once you get used to him.
When I passed by a field, Barts gave me tomatoes. It's nice for a change.
As Bishop of the Holy Harmonia Kingdom, he comes when trouble arises. He's a lot older than he looks.
He practices magic without a wand, because he uses a ring instead. It must be very expensive.
It is written that he was in the Dunan Unification War 15 years ago. He fought against the New State Army on the side of the Highland Army. How old is he?
He looks quite fastidious, but that's only because his attendants take care of him. He is really nonchalant. It's surprising.
Trivia
- Sasarai uses a ring as a weapon.
- His weapon also shares the same name as Luc's weapon in Suikoden III.
- After the events of Suikoden III, Sasarai returns to Harmonia with problems and doubts about his existence.
- Both Luc and Sasarai are not human. Both were created to be the recipients of the true runes collected by Hikusaak and Harmonia.
- When Luc steals the True Earth Rune are different in the manga and in the game.
- In the Suikoden III manga, Sasarai was removed as general of the army of Harmonia and was arrested because of his incompetence, while Luc was appointed general of the army again. It was during this time that Sasarai is vulnerable and therefore Luc stole the True Earth Rune.
- During the Chapter 3 - 4 in Suikoden III, Sasarai returns to Harmonia, eventually, he is visited by Nash who reported Luc's true intentions. Luc then appears and reveals the truth about how they were created, leaving Sasarai confused and vulnerable.
