Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a remaster compilation of Suikoden and Suikoden II released worldwide for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC (Steam) and Xbox One on March 6, 2025. The game was officially revealed on September 16, 2022 during the Tokyo Game Show 2022. At the Nintendo Direct on August 27, 2024, a new trailer was shown, with a release date set for March 6, 2025.
It is the second time these two titles were bundled together after Genso Suikoden I & II, although the previous compilation offered only minor updates and was never released outside Japan.
Description[]
The compilation features several enhancements, including new artworks for all character portraits in Suikoden, all drawn by Junko Kawano. The portraits in Suikoden II remain the same but were updated to HD. Backgrounds in both games were upgraded to HD with more details. Additionally, both world maps were completely redrawn in 3D. Battle backgrounds and spell effects were also enhanced. The protagonist Tir from Suikoden now has a running animation, which was omitted in the previous compilation, although diagonal sprites were implemented.
It also includes new and HD Sound effects for both exploration and battle modes. Translations for both games were revised to match more the original Japanese content.
Among other features include the possibility to Fast Forward the battles, an Auto-Save feature, a Town Minimap, a Conversation Log and a difficulty mode available from start for both games which includes 3 difficulties; Easy, Normal and Hard, which change the amount of HPs the enemies have. Difficulties except from Hard can be changed anytime in the settings of the game menu.
The trailer from Nintendo Direct on August 27, 2024, showed options for battle speeds to be at 2x or 4x.
Additionally, on the same day as the game release, the original soundtrack titled Suikoden I & II Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars Original Soundtrack was released. There is also a Blu-ray titled Symphonic Poem from Genso Suikoden with Animation Music Video Special Set, which captures the full orchestral concert held in October 2022.
The original dialogue of the characters of both games had changed. The primary example was during the war battles in Suikoden II, Culgan is shown to remark Solon Jhee for his recklessness instead of warning him, Seed's aristocratic and temperamental behavior from his dialogue was toned down and lessened and to show him being both sarcastic and heelish when he speaks to Culgan and Solon Jhee mocks Viktor for the first time during the third major battle since he never mocks him in the original dialogue.
