The Toran Republic (トラン共和国 Toran Republic) is a country located in the southeast region of the Northern Continent. Its capital city is the city of Gregminster, located northeast of Lake Toran in the center of the nation. Toran borders the Dunan Republic to the north, a number of unknown territories to the west, Kanakan via an ocean border to the southwest and territories of the former Kooluk Empire to the south.
After the fall of the Scarlet Moon Empire to the forces of the Liberation Army in SY 457, the Toran Republic was founded as a system of government to govern the Toran region in a fair and even-handed manner.
The leader of the Toran Liberation Army, Tir McDohl, was expected to take up the mantel of President however prior to his appointment, the young leader left the country without a word. In his stead, Lepant, a prominent Liberation Army general, was appointed the first President of the fledgling nation.
In Suikoden II, Ridley described the Toran Republic in one of his dialogues: "It's a new country south of the City-State, established after the State's perpetual enemy, the Scarlet Moon Empire, was overthrown and Emperor Barbarossa was killed. Their first President is a man named Lepant, although Tir, the hero who vanquished Barbarossa, was supposed to take the throne.
History[]
The early part of the history of the Toran Republic focused on its attempts to reclaim land that the Scarlet Moon Empire had lost to Jowston during the Toran Liberation War in the Senan region. In the year 458, Commander-in-Chief Kwanda Rosman led the Toran Army to battle and eventually the forces of Tinto and South Window withdrew from the area, bringing the region back under Toran control.
Two years later, President Lepant, fearing the power and ambitions of Luca Blight of Highland, and especially recognizing that he would likely invade the Toran Republic were he able to defeat Jowston, entered into an alliance with the New State Army, which was attempting to unite the former Jowston City-States to fight off Highland invasion. The Toran Republic sent a force 5,000 strong to aid the Allied Army in their struggles and also granted diplomatic immunity to prominent Allied Army representatives.
Later the same year, Tir McDohl returned to Gregminster in order to save the life of a young boy. Lepant offered Tir the position of President but was rebuffed as the young McDohl had no desire for political power.
Politics[]
As of SY 475, President Lepant was still serving as President of the Toran Republic, emerging victorious in all elections to date thanks to his smooth handling of the fledging nation and his diplomatic abilities in negotiating with enemies of the old Scarlet Moon Empire.
Geography[]
Gregminster is the capital city of the Toran Republic, having only suffered slight damage towards the conclusion of the Toran Liberation War. It is famous for its art and ceramics as well as the astounding 'Golden Goddess' statue in the city's central plaza.
Other prominent towns include Lenankamp, located south of Gregminster, where the Liberation Army was originally based, Antei, the largest city in Kunan which thrives on trade as well as Kirov in Dana, famed for its international trading with the Dunan region. Dragon Knights' Fortress, the home of the Dragon Knights and the Warrior's Village in Lorimar, although strictly autonomous are strongly allied to the Republican government.
The Toran Republic also encourages the repopulation of towns destroyed by warfare, especially the town of Kalekka in Dana. The repopulation effort is slow but has been successful to some degree with Kalekka becoming an export of flour.
The Toran area also has a number of Jujube plants. Vendors pick the fruit of the Jujube, selling it in towns and cities across the Toran Republic.
