The True Holy Rune, also known as Godspeed Rune and High-Speed Rune, is a type of rune in the Suikoden series.
Description[]
The True Holy Rune, despite its name, is not a true rune. The original Japanese word, "Shin shin gyou hou no monshou" has been fan translated as, "True divine transportation method rune." However, based on the reading of the kanji, it could also be translated directly as "True divine/spirit enforcing the law." The rune is based on an actual item used in the original story, the Water Margin. Konami has confirmed this rune to be a normal support rune. Later games corrected the translation error, renaming it the Godspeed Rune. The new localization in the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster once again changed the name, this time to High-Speed Rune.
Suikoden I & II[]
The High-Speed Rune is the one-of-a-kind rune borne by Stallion, maximizing his leg strength. It allows for high-speed travel regardless of location or distance. Even when spotted by enemies, he could easily escape thanks to his extraordinary speed. It is not one of the 27 True Runes
A rune unique to Stallion that speeds up travels on the world map and gives a 100% chance for a successful retreat. In original Suikoden versions, it also allows the player to dash with the O button in towns and dungeons.
In the Remaster version, the rune now unlocks the Battle Speed (x4) feature in both games, and allow to move at double the speed in the world map while Stallion is in the main party.
Suikoden IV[]
A rune unique to Cedric that not only speeds up Lazlo's running, but the Ship of Obel as well.
Suikoden Tactics[]
A rune unique to Cedric, it doubles movement. Increases Speed.
Suikoden V[]
Renamed as the Godspeed Rune, it is a rune unique to Cathari in Suikoden V. Allows 2× field movement speed and also allows a 100% escape rate.
Trivia[]
- During the events of the Island Liberation War, Cedric is said in the English localization to possess the "True Holy Rune," but this is a mistranslation. In the Japanese version of the game, the name used for Cedric’s ability is identical to that of the Holy Rune (神行法の紋章), not the High-Speed Rune (真神行法の紋章). Cedric does not possess an equippable rune; instead, he passively grants the ability to dash by pressing the confirm button—an effect functionally identical to the Holy Rune from the Gate Rune War. This proves that Cedric’s speed-enhancing ability is unrelated to the High-Speed Rune and that the English name "True Holy Rune" in Suikoden IV is the result of a localization error.
Notes[]
- Some fan sources and wikis mistakenly claim that Stallion gifted a High-Speed Rune to a youth he met. However, official Japanese materials clarify that the character Hou (ホウ) once received the Holy Rune (神行法の紋章) from Stallion and later passed it to the protagonist. This episode is not depicted in-game and refers to the Holy Rune, not the High-Speed Rune (真神行法の紋章). The confusion likely stems from misreading or mistranslating the Japanese phrasing.
