Biography[edit | edit source]
Wielding the sword/gun Talgrund, Zaj is the nemesis of Nash Latkje and had earned himself the title of Zaj of the Black Moon. As an adopted member of the Quilous family, Zaj held many connections within Harmonia and also had a certain level of autonomy within the Howling Voice Guild itself. However, despite his relatively high status in Harmonia, Zaj held an intense hatred towards Harmonia and 1st Class Harmonians in particular. This stemmed from the conquest of his home country, Sanadia, in 440 which saw the infant Zaj become a third-class citizen and sent to Crystal Valley to be raised as a Harmonian.
At the age of 13, Zaj returned to Sanadia only to find that everyone had become Harmonian sympathisers in the meantime. So, Zaj returned to Harmonia and joined the Howling Voice Guild. Although too old to join normally, Zaj passed a series of tests in order to gain membership, including the murder of his own parents. As member of the Howling Voice Guild, Zaj was adept in gunplay as well as the creation and use of poisons. He was also known for specialising in espionage and torture, making him a skilled operative for the Guild.
Upon his graduation as a squire-class gunner, Zaj became a tutor to Julie Latkje in Crystal Valley. However, he was actually hired to assume control of the Latkje family and to bring it down and so he secretly poisoned Julie's parents. Zaj also harboured resentment towards the family, as being one of the more influential families in Harmonian politics, Zaj felt that the family were responsible for the unjust system he had to suffer under. Julie's brother, Nash, discovered that his parents were killed by a poison known only to Howling Voice Guild and so confronted Zaj about his true identity. Zaj tried to dismiss the claims but eventually revealed the truth of his actions. He tried to surprise Nash by having a small pistol slide from his sleeve into his hand but Nash spotted the pistol and quickly attacked Zaj, giving him a mortal wound before being forced to flee Crystal Valley.
Zaj survived the blow and the poisoning which resulted from it due to an antidote prepared by the Guild. Enraged that Nash dealt such a blow to him in what was supposed to be a purely political scheme, Zaj then attempted to have Nash killed on several occasions while he served in the Harmonian Southern Frontier Defense Force. The two encountered each other in Greenhill during the Dunan Unification War and Nash then journeyed to Crystal Valley in order to participate in a final duel with Zaj. After a deadly duel, Zaj was defeated once more. Following this, Zaj's status is unknown although it is probable that he is still attempting to have Nash killed indirectly.
